While a number of translated works have, in recent years, been made available to the wider South African readership, only a handful of high-profile individuals continue to enjoy international recognition. This anthology is a collection of poems from contemporary poets who are actively writing and publishing and whose work is a good reflection of the current trends evident in Afrikaans literature. The editor hopes it will go some way towards remedying the present lack of exposure and encourage future publications offering translations of writing also representative of the broader traditions of historical and twentieth-century Afrikaans poetry.
In compiling the anthology, the editor approached poets who had published at least a second volume of poetry in the years from 2005 to 2011. Some poems were unpublished at the time of the selections but have found a subsequent home in more recent volumes of poems. Individuals were asked to submit up to ten poems; some offered their own translations, but for the remainder she made use of a panel of excellent English translators. In each case the poet worked in close collaboration with the translator of his or her choice.

    Author
    Marlise Joubert (editor)

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0741/7836/3555/files/img_9781485301073_c86664f2-7971-4df2-ad2f-19490d7a64c6.jpg?v=1776549434
9780195703313
Boesman and Lena

Set on the Swartkops madflats, just outside Port Elizabeth, the play deals with two squatters. This Penguin Modern Classics edition includes a new introduction by Robert Bray. Abandoned by her husband, Amanda Wingfield comforts herself with recollections of her earlier, more gracious life in Blue Mountain when she was pursued by 'gentleman callers'. Her son Tom, a poet with a job in a warehouse, longs for adventure and escape from his mother's suffocating embrace, while Laura, her shy crippled daughter, has her glass menagerie and her memories. Amanda is desperate to find her daughter a husband, but when the long-awaited gentleman caller does arrive, Laura's romantic illusions are crushed. Tennessee Williams (1911-1983) was born in Columbus, Mississippi. When his father, a travelling salesman, moved with his family to St Louis some years later, both he and his sister found it impossible to settle down to city life. He entered college during the Depression and left after a couple of years to take a clerical job in a shoe company. He stayed there for two years, spending the evenings writing. He received a Rockefeller Fellowship in 1940 for his play Battle of Angels, and he won the Pulitzer Prize in 1948 and 1955. 'Big Daddy' Pollitt, the richest cotton planter in the Mississippi Delta, is about to celebrate his sixty-fifth birthday. His two sons have returned home for the occasion: Gooper, his wife and children, Brick, an ageing football hero who has turned to drink, and his feisty wife Maggie. As the hot summer evening unfolds, the veneer of happy family life and Southern gentility gradually slips away as unpleasant truths emerge and greed, lies, jealousy and suppressed sexuality threaten to reach boiling point. Made into a film starring Elizabeth Taylor and Paul Newman, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof is a masterly portrayal of family tensions and individuals trapped in prisons of their own making. Among his many other plays Penguin have published The Glass Menagerie (1944), The Rose Tattoo (1951), Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1955), Sweet Bird of Youth (1959), The Night of the Iguana (1961), and Small Craft Warnings (1972). Much of this reaction was expressed in verse, most of it subliterary, but some of it such as Hardy's 'Drummer Hodge', putting forward a view of war more akin to Owen's 'Futility' than Tennyson's 'The Change of the Light Brigade'. The first chapter of Drummer Hodge traces the growth of pacifist attitudes to war and the compassionate treatment of soldiering in the course of the nineteenth century. Subsequent chapters deal with the imperial theme (much questioned at this time) in Boer War verse; the contributions of writers such as Newbolt, Hardy, Kipling, and AE Housman, as well as that of numerous soldier poets; the effect of the war on the literature of the Boers; Boer war poetry from the United States and the rest of the English-speaking world; and the literary results of the enormous pro-Boer movement in France, Germany and Holland: countries in which the Boer republics were seen as images of a rural simplicity and patriarchal integrity lost in Europe. The work is based on research completed over many years in libraries in South Africa, Britain, France, Germany and Holland, and constitutes an exercise in the comparative history of nineteenth-century English and European war poetry on a scale probably not attempted before.

    Author
    Malvern van Wyk Smith

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0741/7836/3555/files/img_9780198120827_043e3576-e2bb-46d8-a367-d7452fe2f571.jpg?v=1776457733
9781919825588
Mandela Dead and Alive 1976 - 2001

These poems trace Nelson Mandela’s journey to freedom. From us, they say, All evils come. Yet they themselves It is who through defiant deeds Bring sorrow on them-far more sorrow Than fate would have them bear.' Attributed to the blind Greek poet, Homer, The Odyssey is an epic tale about cunning and strength of mind. It takes its starting point ten years after the fall of the city of Troy and follows its Greek warrior hero Odysseus as he tries to journey to his home of Ithaca in northwest Greece after the Greek victory over the Trojans. On his travels, Odysseus comes across surreal islands and foreign lands where he is in turn challenged and supported by those that he meets on his travels as he attempts to find his way back home in order to vanquish those who threaten his estate. In turn, his son Telemachus has to grow up quickly as he attempts to find his father and protect his mother from her suitors. Dealing with the universal themes of temptation and courage, the epic journey that Odysseus undertakes is as meaningful today as it was almost 3,000 years ago when the story was composed.

    Author
    Homer

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0741/7836/3555/files/img_9780007420094_dc4a7750-34cb-4e34-9339-6a508be363f2.jpg?v=1776447154
9780060750503
Rumi The Book of Love

Now in paperback, this is the definitive collection of America′s bestselling poet Rumi′s finest poems of love and lovers. This Penguin Classics edition is translated by Robert Fagles with introductions and notes by Bernard Knox. Collected here are Antigone, Oedipus the King and Oedipus at Colonus, in a translation by Robert Fagles which retains all of Sophocles' lucidity and power: the cut and thrust of his dialogue, his ironic edge, the surge and majesty of his choruses and, above all, the agonies and triumphs of his characters. Oedipus in exile, searching for his identity, desperately trying to avoid his fate, seeking the truth of his origins and achieving immortality; his daughter, Antigone, defending her integrity and ideals to the death - these heroic, tragic figures have captivated theatregoers and readers since the fifth century BC. It is Sophocles' characterisation of Oedipus that would, in the nineteenth century, inspire Sigmund Freud to a revolutionary conception of the human mind, and the tragedies in this volume continue to move and inspire us to this day. Sophocles (496-405 BC) was born at Colonus, just outside Athens. His long life spanned the rise and decline of the Athenian Empire; he was a friend of Pericles, and though not an active politician he held several public offices, both military and civil. The leader of a literary circle and friend of Herodotus, Sophocles wrote over a hundred plays, drawing on a wide and varied range of themes, and winning the City Dionysia eighteen times; though only seven of his tragedies have survived, among them Antigone, Oedipus Rex, Ajax and Oedipus at Colonus.

    Author
    Sophocles

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0741/7836/3555/files/img_9780140444254_3dc6db15-c34d-4cb5-9f86-c2969c49dd13.jpg?v=1776453369
9780798183185
Pillage

In Pillage Krog develops her familiar themes of family, body and land but this time in the harsh light of pillaging, whether being done by nature, humans, or old age. The poems reveal a painful fragility and yet also finding comfort, a nourishment in remarkable moments of beauty: the delight of an egret in a vlei, watching over a young child who is discovering the world around him, and remembering the raptures of love.

Pillage is translated by poet and translator, Karen Press.

    Author
    Antjie Krog

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0741/7836/3555/files/img_9780798183185_69ceaa33-7912-4904-9120-807dfc4645b8.jpg?v=1776505889
9781472293855
Lvoe

From the internationally bestselling author of Love Her Wild, The Dark Between Stars, and The Truth About Magic comes LVOE., a dazzling new journey into the great unknown by Atticus.
