James arrives in Kalk Bay from Johannesburg to stay with the grandmother he has never met. His parents have grown apart and might get a divorce. As time passes, James not only has to come to terms with this, but also with the details of the 'old' life his mum left behind to marry his dad. James feels quite lost. Since childhood James has had to carry the burden of a horrid birthmark. He finds a friend in Nonhle, but she wants him to join in swimming and beach activities. James can’t bear to reveal his secret. He also learns that there is a shady side to the sleepy fishing village: the boy Faried and his uncle Yusuf are known abalone poachers, but everyone seems to turn a blind eye. James’ curiosity leads him to follow Faried to the beach one evening . . . But soon, in a desperate attempt to stay hidden from the poachers, James finds himself in a life-threatening situation. He has to find courage to overcome his fears.
