'I presume that ... my life and experience is of some interest. But if it is, it is chiefly so because I have lived through interesting times, in an interesting country, travelled to many interesting places, and been accompanied along the way by interesting folk.'

John de Gruchy is a well known South African theologian, expert on Bonhoeffer, struggle icon and international academic. We trace his story from Viking ancestors, a seafaring grandfather and illegitimate grandmother to working as an ecumenical activist for the South African Council of Churches and voting in South Africa's first democratic election. We journey through South Africa in transition and a rapidly changing global society. A long the way we meet interesting and controversial people like Albert Luthuli, Jaap Durand, P.W. Botha and General Constand Viljoen. Today he is a retired, unretired professor and woodworker, living in Hermanus.
This is the tale of an extraordinary life.
