As a young photographer and wine enthusiast in the 1940s, Fred Lyon looked at the wine photography of the time and believed he could capture it better. That belief sparked a remarkable seven-decade journey through some of the world’s most celebrated wine regions.
From the grand châteaux of France to the vineyards of Chile, Italy, Greece and Portugal, Lyon travelled widely in search of the people, places and traditions behind winemaking — always returning to the iconic Napa and Sonoma valleys near his home in San Francisco.
Through his distinctive eye, Lyon captures both sweeping landscapes and intimate everyday moments that define vineyard life: families gathering for harvest, horses hauling freshly picked grapes, and workers sharing bread and cheese during a morning break.
