America – a Fantasy

In America – a Fantasy, a youngish, aspiring South African man with literary leanings but few prospects heads to an imagined USA.

His plan is to travel the fabled 3 000 miles from the east coast to the west coast and write about it. Publication could go some way towards dispelling the obscurity he has to suffer.

Moreover, he hopes to rid himself of a regret or two. Hitchhiking across the continent he encounters phantoms of American lore. All around him characters and events confirm his preconceived South African notions. Yet people like the vaguely reckless Maureen, an ageing artist, ultimately introduces him to what the artistic life could really hold.
